Seven Palestinian detainees in “Ofer” prison on Tuesday tested positive for the coronavirus, raising the number of confirmed cases among Palestinian detainees to 24, according to a prisoners’ rights group.

In a press statement, the Waed Society for Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners said that the new cases of Covid-19 were detected in Sections 14 and 17 in “Ofer” prison, where other cases were reported.

The Society called for international human rights groups to declare “Ofer” prison as an active coronavirus circulation zone.

Meanwhile, Hamas spokesperson Abdel Latif al-Qanoa said that the surge in coronavirus infections among Palestinian detainees inside Israeli jails is a “dangerous indicator threatening the prisoners’ lives” as the Israeli prison administration has failed to take the measures needed to curb the spread of the deadly virus among them.

In a press release, al-Qanoa called for international human rights organisation to immediately intervene and place pressure on the Israeli occupation to save the lives of Palestinian detainees inside its prisons.
