Remembering Jenin massacre: horrific devastation beyond belief

April 03, 2023

Al-Qassam Website - The Jenin refugee camp massacre in 2002 was one of the deadliest massacres committed by the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of Palestinian civilians and the destruction of countless homes and buildings.

The massacre was part of what the Israeli occupation called "Operation Defensive Shield", a military raid that aimed at rooting out Palestinian resistance in the camp and deterring the Palestinian resistance fighters in occupied Palestine, in vain.

Home to thousands of Palestinian refugees, the camp, located in the northern occupied West Bank, is a densely populated area that had become a breeding ground for resistance activity.

On April 3, 2002, the IOF launched an attack to impose their sovereignty over the camp and erase the stubborn Palestinian popular resistance. The brutal attack began with a heavy bombardment of the camp, using tanks, helicopter gunships, and artillery.

The aggression against the camp was brutal and intense, with reports of widespread destruction and civilian casualties as the merciless occupying forces razed homes to the ground while their occupants were inside. Hundreds were kidnapped by the genocidal Israeli occupation forces and subjected to torture and ill-treatment in jail.

Men leaning on canes, women, and children were the target of the Israeli occupation's heinous massacre.

The Jenin refugee camp massacre sparked international outrage and condemnation, with many calling for an independent investigation into the unjustified assault. The United Nations Security Council passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of a fact-finding mission to investigate the incident.

However, the Israeli occupation government rejected calls for an independent investigation, claiming that the onslaught aimed to root out freedom fighters and weapons. Still, it quickly became clear that the vast majority of those killed and injured were civilians.

Peter Bouckaert, a senior researcher for Human Rights Watch, said: "The destruction is on a massive scale. Certainly a significant number of civilians were killed during this operation, including several children, quite a few women and a few elderly people."

In conclusion, the Jenin massacre is considered one of the most brutal attacks against Palestinian civilians in modern history, whose tragic legacy continues to haunt the region to this day. There is no doubt that the incident had a profound impact on the lives of those who were affected by it and continues to shape the ongoing freedom struggle against the settler-colonial Israeli occupation of Palestine.

The people of Jenin have refused to be silenced or intimidated, and their unswerving commitment to their just issue is a testament to their resilience and courage. And despite the countless crimes committed by the Israeli occupation forces against the Palestinian people in Jenin, including extrajudicial killings, home demolitions, and arbitrary detentions, the Palestinian resistance has remained strong.
