Gaza Death Toll Surpasses 72,000 as Health System Nears the Brink of Collapse

February 16, 2026

Al-Qassam Website _ The death toll in the Gaza Strip has risen to 72,027, with some 171,651 Palestinians wounded since the occupation's genocidal war began on October 7, 2023, Gaza-based health authorities announced on Saturday. The figures include 174 additional fatalities recorded between January 30 and February 6.

Health officials also reported that 576 Palestinians have been killed and 1,543 wounded since the Gaza ceasefire came into effect on October 10, highlighting that casualties have continued despite a relative reduction in active fighting.

In a separate statement, Gaza’s health authorities warned that the territory’s remaining hospitals are barely functioning. Overwhelmed facilities are no longer able to provide adequate treatment, operating instead as overcrowded waiting areas for thousands of injured patients. Officials cautioned that many face an uncertain, and potentially fatal, future due to the near-total absence of treatment options.

The ongoing campaign of ethnic cleansing and forced displacement has crippled Gaza’s healthcare system, making it extraordinarily difficult to sustain even basic medical services. Attempts to restore specialized care have largely failed, while daily medical operations are conducted under complex and often impossible conditions.

According to health officials, severe shortages now affect nearly every aspect of the medical sector. Basic painkillers are increasingly unavailable, while 46% of essential medicines, 66% of medical supplies, and 84% of laboratory and blood bank materials are completely out of stock.

Life-saving services—including cancer treatment, care for blood disorders, surgical procedures, intensive care units, and primary healthcare—have been among the hardest hit. The limited supplies that remain are grossly insufficient to meet the overwhelming needs of patients.

International organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), have repeatedly warned that Gaza’s health system is on the verge of total collapse. Scores of hospitals have been damaged or destroyed, medical personnel are exhausted and traumatized, and humanitarian supply deliveries remain severely restricted.

Health authorities and aid agencies continue to issue urgent appeals for immediate medical supplies, unrestricted humanitarian access, and protection for healthcare facilities and workers. As the colonial occupation government's genocide enters its third year, the soaring death toll and the systematic dismantling of Gaza’s healthcare system highlight the severe humanitarian crisis facing the people of the devastated enclave.
